Class Descriptions

Herbalism 101

Welcome to Herbalism 101! During our time together we will be learning the science of plant medicine and how to identify and treat symptoms within the body. The heart of this class is to empower students through hands-on experiences and an understanding of plant medicine that will stay with them long after our time together! We will be making things like Fire cider, elderberry syrup, calendula salve, just to name a few!

English & Literature

Isn't it wonderful when a story truly comes to life? In this class, students will explore engaging literature, diving into analysis and discussions that deepen their understanding. Along the way, they’ll subtly master the fundamentals of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Join us for a journey that combines the joy of reading with essential language skills!

Civic Engagement & Leadership

This course establishes core values that translate into becoming a productive citizen. Lessons will cover critical skills including time management, problem solving, effective communication and leadership . Throughout the semester, students will develop an awareness of community needs and learn how to become part of the solution.

Art & Art History

This class surveys the visual arts in a global context from prehistory to the dawn of the modern era. Focusing on multiple premodern cultures and traditions, the course examines a wide variety of art forms, from public monuments and architecture to paintings, textiles, and illustrated books.

Qigong and Creative Movement Lab
-Cultivating Curiosity, Courage and Confidence with Movement & Qigong-

Qigong is an old practice for health and well-being. By mindfully moving the body in harmony with the breath, qigong practices help calm the nervous system, restore presence, and balance energy levels. Qigong helps move stagnant energy and diminish overactive minds. In qigong practices, the movements and breathing patterns are simple, so anyone can learn them. Building on the basic of qigong, Shane will introduce more playful movements and even game-play to round out a fun, engaging movement class for kids.

Spanish Immersion

Get ready for our vibrant Spanish Immersion class, where language learning comes alive through music, dance, art, games, and playful activities! We’ll use all our senses to make more meaningful connections and deeper learning. Each lesson is carefully crafted to stimulate curiosity and confidence while building vocabulary and pronunciation skills. Discover the joy of speaking Spanish and make lasting memories along the way! - ¡Vamos! (Let’s go!)

Exploration of Herbs as Food & Medicine

We use herbs and spices in our cooking to enhance flavors but traditionally herbs have a very long history of being used for their medicinal properties. Throughout our time together this semester we will explore the different properties of herbs, their uses in keeping us healthy and numerous ways to prepare them (teas, lemonades, tinctures, honeys, vinegars, etc.). We will focus on simple botany to really get an understanding of plant parts and structure. The class will encompass using all of our senses - taste, touch and smell and children will learn how to tune into their intuitive senses while working with the plants. If weather allows, we will spend time outdoors exploring the different plants in the area and learn that what we consider to be “weeds” are often times very useful herbs! We will engage in drawing and writing activities with the herbs and learn the fascinating folk lore of many plants and how they were revered in different cultures!

Cultural Cooking

Exploring a culture's cuisine is a wonderful way to gain a deeper appreciation of their traditions and customs. Why not embark on a culinary journey around the globe and cook up some delicious dishes together? Who knows, we might even pick up some interesting insights into history and geography along the way!!

Music- Sound & Music Lab

A playful approach to rhythm, music theory with a keyboard, and sound engineering with a computer. Students will be asked to relate to the feeling of various types of music, introduced to basic movement across a keyboard, and exposed to a few basic ideas of sound engineering and production on a digital audio workstation (DAW – Logic). As a group we will also explore rhythm; physically playing and moving to simple rhythms with games, activities, and drumming.

Theatre- Shakespeare Through Performance

In this 10-week class, students will learn the fundamentals of Shakespeare in an interactive workshop. We will dive into iambic pentameter, classic characters, and a bit of history while also exploring acting fundamentals. We will end class most weeks by listening to A Stage Full of Shakespeare Stories while students illustrate scenes from the plays.
WEEK 1: Do you bite your thumb at me?
Shakespeare’s language through insults.
Away you mouldy rogue, away!  There’s no time to feel intimidated by old English when you’re mixing and matching silly insults. You are as a candle, the better burnt out.
WEEK 2: Iambic Pentamer- We will clap and stop our way through this rhythm as well learn how it is similar to a heartbeat. Students will have an opportunity to write their own poems in the rhyme scheme.
WEEK 3: Thou art= you are- Students will have the opportunity to “translate” passages of Shakespeare’s plays into more modern day language
WEEK 4 -9: Rehearsals- Students will rehearse together to put on a performance of either a scene from a Shakespeare play or they will memorize individual sonnets. If there are students who are not interested in performing, there will be opportunities to support the production behind the scenes.

WEEK 10: Performance-Students will perform their scenes or sonnets and families invited to attend.

Physics- The Dance of Life
-How Things Move & Interact-

Physics is the understanding of how things move and interact. Students may gain perspective by studying how things move, both within themselves and in the external world. By relating motion to the things that move within ourselves first, like air in the lungs or the force of an emotion, we make better sense of physics as a whole. It becomes relatable. Then, we can explore its applications in the world at large and the various careers which use physics. Hopefully, students will be inspired by physics in order to broaden their perspective and ignite curiosities about the motion in our lives. The great machine that is the ocean, music theory, practices in sustainable energy, and even our personal relationships can be better understood through physics.

Micronations

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to create your very own country? That’s the exciting world of micronations! In this course, students will establish their own leadership, government, and laws. They'll have the chance to design a unique flag, stamps, and currency, as well as develop their own music, language, and holidays. We’ll culminate the semester with a spectacular showcase, allowing everyone to present their micronations to the world!

Mythology

What are myths? Myths are captivating stories crafted to convey values about people, places, and things. They invite us to explore imaginative explanations and meanings in our universe. These traditional tales, some of which are thousands of years old, come from cultures around the globe, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Indians, and many others. In this class, we will delve into the rich morals, poetic expressions, and historical contexts of these myths, enhancing our imagination and inspiring students to create their own mythical narratives!

Unlocking the Constitution and the Declaration of Indepedence

Why was the Constitution written? In this class, students will explore the foundational principles behind its creation, learning how laws are made and the roles of the different branches of government. We’ll delve into the Constitutional Amendments and the Declaration of Independence
